LIGHT Institute Spotlight: Tiesha Watts Founder of G3

Today, we want to highlight a student in our third cohort of the LIGHT Institute, Tiesha Watts, and her program Ghetto Girls Golf (G3). This initiative is for young girls to learn about STEM, advocacy, leadership, empowerment, golfing, and so much more. Her first class starts this week and we wanted our community to learn about the program and how to get involved. Keep reading to learn how!

The Visionary Behind G3

Tiesha, the Founder and Executive Director of G3 (Ghetto Girls Golf) and The Dax Foundation, is an intentional advocate for marginalized communities whose research centers equity in science spaces for Black girls. As a first-generation scholar and current STEM PhD student, her work directly confronts the reality that Black girls across the South face layered inequities, including educational disparity, reproductive justice gaps, economic barriers, and systemic exclusion from elite spaces like golf, long before adulthood. G3 was born out of her personal lived experience navigating these very systems without adequate access or visibility. Driven by Black feminist principles and community organizing, she created G3 to be the exact program she needed growing up: a culturally grounded, affirming space that disrupts systemic barriers and centers Black girls’ brilliance, autonomy, and joy.

Driving Local Impact and Equity

Currently deepening her impact as a member of Cohort 3 in the Light Institute with the United Women of Color, Tiesha aligns her grassroots leadership with powerful regional advocacy to bring opportunity directly to Huntsville. Through G3’s comprehensive 8-week summer program, Black girls ages 11–18 are equipped to take up space, speak up, and lead boldly. By blending rigorous golf training, STEM education, financial literacy, reproductive justice, and mentorship, G3 transforms elite spaces into environments of creativity and generational wealth. Rooted in the core values of excellence, empowerment, and equity, the organization works tirelessly to ensure that being a Black girl is celebrated, cultivating a legacy where sisterhood becomes safety and access becomes an absolute right.
