UWOC Community Rides the Bus to Montgomery for Voting Rights - All Roads Lead to the South

Supporters from around the country, including UWOC supporters from North Alabama, joined speakers such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Cory Booker at All Roads Lead to the South on Saturday, May 16, to rally, march, and organize for voting rights and protections for democracy.

Rhamonda Anglin shared her experience:

“Saturday morning felt like the beginning of something powerful. As groups of people from all ages and racial backgrounds met up to board buses to go to Montgomery, Alabama to protest for voter’s rights. Specifically, to protect black voting rights, you could feel the passion and care coming from each person. The bus ride there felt familiar and like a rite of passage. The energy of the protest from 1965 filled the air as we got off the bus to a crowd of people who cared just as much as we did, and I am sure there were those who were there on Bloody Sunday decades ago as well as the March from back then who also showed up. As I took photos of individuals who carried the spirit of their ancestors with shirts that affirmed that they understood the day’s assignment, I couldn’t help but feel hopeful for Alabama. People openly talked to strangers about politics in their Southern dialect with complete understanding about what we are up against. The sun beamed down on me as I took it all in and stopped to catch my breath. A stranger noticed my exhaustion and determination and fanned me until I was able to find life again. This is how the south moves. We show up for one another, we understand southern hospitality and our southern twang doesn’t discount our intelligence. There is good soil here and it will always lead back to the south when it comes to change.”
